O Departamento de Engenharia de Estruturas da Escola de Engenharia de S\u00e3o Carlos (EESC) da USP sedia, nos dias 17 e 18 de outubro, o evento Sustainability of the Built Environment<\/em>, com participa\u00e7\u00e3o do professor Michael Havbro Faber, do Department of the Built Environment – Aalborg University (Denmark).\u00a0<\/div>\n

Ser\u00e3o duas palestras e um workshop, com o objetivo de divulgar, no Brasil e no Estado de S\u00e3o Paulo, iniciativas para a Sustentabilidade do Ambiente Constru\u00eddo.<\/div>\n

Na oportunidade, Faber far\u00e1 a divulga\u00e7\u00e3o da iniciativa n\u00e3o-governamental GLOBE Consensus<\/a>, que visa direcionar a aten\u00e7\u00e3o da comunidade global, dos pol\u00edticos, dos l\u00edderes industriais e dos tomadores de decis\u00e3o sobre a import\u00e2ncia cr\u00edtica do ambiente constru\u00eddo para o desenvolvimento sustent\u00e1vel, em escala local e global. A\u00e7\u00f5es s\u00e3o\u00a0 urgentemente necess\u00e1rias para assegurar que o ambiente constru\u00eddo do futuro seja resiliente, adequadamente seguro, e social, ambientalmente e economicamente sustent\u00e1vel.<\/div>\n

\nOn the modeling of risk, resilience and sustainability<\/strong><\/em>
\nIn this presentation the focus will be directed on the probabilistic representations of systems. Based is taken in the presentation and discussion of a framework developed by the Joint Committee on Structural Safety, aiming to support decision making in the context of development and integrity management of structures and infrastructure systems. It is shown how, based on this framework, systems risks may be modelled from a perspective focusing on scenarios of events leading to direct and indirect consequences, and also how this modeling perspective facilitates that the robustness of systems may be quantified. Finally, extending on the scenario based perspective the concepts of resilience and sustainability are introduced in a manner that\u00a0 facilitates not only the modeling of events of resilience failure and sustainability failure, but also facilitates answering the important question \u2013 how resilient is resilient enough?<\/p>\n

\nOn Tradeoffs between Sustainability, Safety and Economy in Infrastructure Development<\/strong><\/em>
\nSustainability is now appreciated to comprise on of the leading objectives in the development and integrity management of the built environment. In the past the leading objective has been adequate safety and economic efficiency \u2013 and the basis for developments of past and present safety formats for codified design of structures is based on this. The big question now is how safety formats for the next generation design codes should be established such as to ensure adequate levels of sustainability. To answer this question necessitates a deeper understanding of the tradeoffs between safety, economy and sustainability. In this presentation recent and yet unpublished results on these tradeoffs in the context of design and integrity management of roadway infrastructure systems are presented and their possible implications on future best practices discussed.<\/p>\n
