Natalia Ca\u00f1as Estrada<br \/>\n<\/strong>Optical Engineer \u2013 Future Technologies, Mynaric, Munich, Germany<br \/>\nAssociate Vice-President of Strategic Partnerships, IEEE Photonics Society<\/p>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Esse evento \u00e9 de interesse de toda comunidade EESC, uma vez que os desafios construtivos e de gerenciamento t\u00e9rmico em componentes fot\u00f4nicos s\u00e3o barreiras importantes para novas tecnologias (\u00f3pticos, computadores eficientes e aplica\u00e7\u00f5es aeroespaciais).<\/p>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Os convidados tamb\u00e9m abordar\u00e3o a proposta de implantar um cap\u00edtulo IEEE de estudantes no Brasil, o que pode interessar aos alunos considerando ser uma oportunidade de contatos profissionais a n\u00edvel internacional.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Presentation Summary:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Photonic technology and products are at the center of several leading-edge technical opportunities, such as the quantum 2.0 revolution, artificial intelligence (AI) and worldwide connectivity. This talk will focus on key current aspects of photonic technology:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs)<\/li>\n<li>High Power (Multi-Watt) Diode Lasers<\/li>\n<li>High-Capacity Free Space Optical (FSO) Communication Links<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The presentation will address the engineering challenges presented by these photonic components and systems from an optical, electrical and mechanical perspective.<\/p>\n<p>The presentation will also include an overview of the IEEE Photonics Society activities and its objective to support the Brazilian photonic ecosystem in its widest form, industry, universities, research laboratories, support organizations and engineering aspects that relate to photonics.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding PICs, this talk will work its way up from the drivers for photonic integration \u2013 why do we need Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs)? What are their similarities and differences with Electronic Integrated Circuits (EICs)? This analysis of integration drivers will lead to a discussion of recent progress on the main paths: monolithic, heterogeneous and hybrid. The talk will consider possible approaches to meet the additional demanding considerations for future Quantum PICs.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding High Power Diode Lasers, this talk will describe the demanding requirements of this type of devices from a thermal, electrical and optical point of view. Areas where breakthroughs are needed will be highlighted.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding Free Space Optical Communications, this talk will focus on the multidisciplinary work required in the development of industry products. Cutting-edge technology development, such as Space applications, requires professionals of different fields to work together on a constant basis, sharing knowledge and creating synergies to create a successful product. In this part of the talk, we will highlight the importance of product development from system engineer perspective, and the importance of mechanical and optical design.<\/p>\n<p>Would you like to find out how you can contribute to the development of photonics technology? He received his Bachelor of Engineering Degree from the Universidad de Chile and then, in his early twenties, he went to the University of Cambridge in England to do a Ph.D. in opto-electronics, a new field of studies at the time. Now, decades later, he has lived through the whole range of experiences that relate to the research, development, manufacturing and commercialization of complex photonic devices and systems used in communication, sensor and industrial applications. In the past 34 years, Daniel has been directly involved with the growth of four photonic startups in the United States, Ortel Corporation, Agility Communications, Aerius Photonics and Freedom Photonics. This gives him a unique perspective on the workings of a high-tech small business and the process of transforming leading-edge photonic technology into products.\u00a0Daniel is currently at Atacama Optics &amp; Electronics, Santa Barbara, CA, where he provides support to photonic companies in business development aspects. Natalia Ca\u00f1as Estrada is an Optical Engineer working at Mynaric Lasercom GmbH since May 2021. Natalia is an all-round Optical Engineer with experience in the design, test, and development of products based on optical fibre and free-space optical communication (FSOC). She holds a bachelor&#8217;s degree in Electronic Engineering from the National University of Colombia, MSc in Electronic Engineering from the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (Tarragona, Spain), and MSc in Telecommunications from the Instituto Nacional de Telecomunicacoes, INATEL (Santa Rita do Sapucai, MG). Earlier this year, she successfully defended her PhD thesis in Photonic Systems and Optical communications. Natalia is committed to the development of the Photonics Industry in Latin America, currently acting as the Associate Vice-President of Strategic Partnerships of IEEE Photonics Society.
