Abstract:<\/b><\/p>\n

\n

Effective research and development depend not only on strong ideas and solid results, but also on the ability to communicate them clearly, memorably, and persuasively. This seminar presents practical techniques for improving scientific presentations and technical writing, with emphasis on methods that are simple to adopt and immediately useful for graduate students, faculty members, and R&D professionals.<\/p>\n

The seminar covers how to plan and structure a talk or manuscript, design slides and figures that support a coherent narrative, and present technical material clearly, including text, block diagrams, illustrations, data plots, and equations. It also discusses rehearsal strategies, audience engagement during delivery, effective summarization, and ways to handle questions with confidence. Throughout the seminar, we contrast common ineffective habits with more effective alternatives that make the same content easier to follow, faster to understand, and more compelling.<\/p>\n

Participants will leave with a repeatable process that they can apply to conference talks, thesis defenses, lectures, research meetings, and manuscripts. The seminar also addresses an often-overlooked barrier to effective communication: the impact of electronic-device use by audience members on attention, interaction, and retention.<\/p>\n

This talk has influenced presentation practices in universities and industrial R&D teams by helping researchers communicate technical ideas with greater clarity and impact.<\/p>\n

\nJ. Nelson Amaral\u00a0<\/b>is a\u00a0Professor of Computing Science at the University of Alberta<\/a>, with a Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin, and research interests in optimizing compilers and high-performance computing. He is an ACM Distinguished Engineer and has served as General Chair of PACT (2014), ICPE (2020), ICPP (2020), HPCA (2023), and CASCON (2024). He has also received multiple awards for excellence in teaching and mentoring at the University of Alberta.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
