A large and increasing portion of today’s scholarly research depends on research software. And this software is often open source, as part of open science. However, research software introduces new challenges that are not well-handled by our current system, including credit, funding, and maintenance. This talk will discuss work over the last decade to improve this situation, using examples from the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to highlight global process and its impact on scholarship.
